Institute

Institute

The Institute for Stem cell Therapy and Exploration of Monogenic diseases (I-Stem), has been created the first of January 2005 by INSERM and AFM.
Taking advantage of the Bioethic law of August 6th, 2004, this centre for research and development, is dedicated to the development of treatments based on the potential offered by Stem cells and applicable to rare diseases of genetic origin.

Cell therapy

Cell therapy

One objective of I-Stem is the development of treatments intended for monogenic diseases, founded on the strong potential of stem cells for substitutive and regenerative therapies. We are more focusing on the genodermatoses and the neurodegenerative Huntington disease.

Cellular models

Pathological cell modelling

A second objective of I-Stem is the development of cell models representative of pathologies using human embryonic stem cell lines carrying a mutant gene associated with a given disease.
These should help elucidate mechanisms of pathogenesis, and consequently, reveal possible therapeutic targets. These models could also be used as a basis for screening compounds libraries in order to discover new potential drugs.

First reconstitution of epidermis from human embryonic stem cells

Research on stem cells is advancing with giant steps. The Genodermatoses team has just succeeded in the challenge to re-create the ensemble of human human epidermis from human embryonic stem cells. This work  has been published in the journal Lancet. These researches have notably been financed thanks to donations to the Telethon.

Technology platform

Technology platform
